Race Rock / Galvanizing

Why Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Decades of protection. No maintenance. No recurring cost.

THE CASE FOR HOT-DIP

SUPERIOR CORROSION PROTECTION, PROVEN OVER 150 YEARS

Hot-dip galvanizing has protected steel for over 150 years — and for good reason. The zinc coating is metallurgically bonded to the steel, not just applied on top, giving it durability and self-healing properties that paint, powder coat, and other coatings simply cannot match over a full service life.

01

SERVICE LIFE & COST

BUILT TO LAST DECADES —
MAINTENANCE FREE

Hot-dip galvanizing bonds a zinc coating directly to steel, creating a barrier that protects against rust and corrosion for decades — with no maintenance, and no recurring cost. It’s one of the most economical, longest-lasting forms of corrosion protection available.

Service life is measured as the time until 5% of the surface shows iron oxide (rust). In typical outdoor exposure, that means many decades of protection. The zinc also protects sacrificially — it corrodes in place of the steel, so even at a scratch or cut edge the surrounding zinc continues to protect the base metal.

02

COATING THICKNESS & STANDARDS

ASTM-SPECIFIED. VERIFIED EVERY TIME.

ASTM specifications set the minimum coating thickness for each category of galvanized item. Most galvanized applications carry a minimum coating thickness of 3–4 mils.

Some factors that influence coating thickness we control — surface condition, bath temperature, immersion time, withdrawal rate, and cooling rate. Others are inherent to the steel: chemical composition (silicon and phosphorus can produce thicker, more brittle coatings), cold working, weld material, and hardness.

03

DESIGN FOR GALVANIZING

GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Parts should be designed with proper venting and drainage holes so molten zinc can flow freely in and drain out — this prevents trapped air, ensures full coating coverage, and allows safe processing. Contact our facilities if you have questions or concerns about your product’s ability to be processed.

Reference the AGA publication “The Design of Products to be Hot-Dip Galvanized,” and ASTM A143, A384, and A385 for design and fabrication guidance.
