Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Estimator who will be responsible for reviewing contract plans, performing material takeoffs and preparing bid estimates for manufactured steel highway products. This role is integral to the success of our custom engineered solutions—including bridge rail, specialty guiderail components and miscellaneous steel fabrication—ensuring that each project is accurately estimated, and set up to be efficiently managed, and successfully completed. The ideal candidate will have strong technical acumen, high attention to detail, and a passion for infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review plans and contract specifications to develop accurate quantity take-offs, define scope of work, and develop detailed cost estimates for use in bid preparation.
- Work with sales, purchasing, operations, and engineering department colleagues to ensure that each proposed project’s requirements, from RFQ to delivery, is achievable and effectively communicated across all functional areas.
- Identify and troubleshoot process bottlenecks and help implement timely, cost-effective solutions.
- Maintain working knowledge of DOT and industry standards applicable to highway guardrail and bridge components.
- Stay informed of current market pricing trends and manufacturing capabilities to support accurate estimating and lead time assessments.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Education or training in Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent technical field.
- 3+ years of experience in cost estimating and contract bidding in a steel manufacturing or construction-related industry (preferably DOT, Highway or Bridge construction)
- Strong understanding of fabricated metal products (experience with railings, fencing, barriers, AISC and AWS specifications is ideal)
- Proficiency in reading technical drawings and contract plans, developing detailed take-offs, and determining a complete scope of work from limited information.
- Understanding of the codes of standard practice used in construction contracts: bid advertisements, qualified products lists, approved suppliers, bid lettings, addendums and amendments, contractor-subcontractor awards, notice to proceed, control of materials, RFI’s, submittals, approvals, completion dates, liquidated damages.
- Solid analytical and mathematical skills for estimating and cost control.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with a customer-focused approach.
- Experience using ERP systems and project tracking tools with exceptional proficiency in MS Excel.
- Highly organized with strong ability to manage multiple high visibility projects in a fast-paced environment while meeting tight deadlines.
