Job Summary
We are seeking a degreed Engineer who will be primarily responsible for preparing bid estimates for manufactured steel products used in highway and bridge related infrastructure projects. This individual will take responsibility for, and support projects from bid development through to final delivery combining technical analysis, cost estimating, and cross-functional coordination while working closely with sales, engineering, operations, and manufacturing teams to ensure projects are competitively bid, accurately scoped, and efficiently executed. This role is best suited for a Civil Engineer who has had some estimating experience working for a Highway or Civil Construction contractor and understands the process, lifecycle and dynamics of publicly bid construction projects. The ideal candidate has a passion for infrastructure and strong desire to contribute to a positive customer-experience for our business partners.
Duties and Responsibilities
Estimating & Pre-Construction
- Review contract plans, specifications, bid documents and amendments to define scope of work and project requirements
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs and develop accurate cost estimates for fabricated steel highway products
- Collaborate with sales, purchasing, engineering, and operations to validate pricing, manage RFI’s, identify risks, and assess manufacturing feasibility.
- Maintain working knowledge of DOT standards, bid processes, and qualified product requirements.
- Track bid activity, win-rates, cost metrics and market dynamics to improve future bid accuracy and profitability.
Project Execution and Delivery
- Monitor the backlog portfolio of active projects from award through delivery, ensuring schedule and quality requirements are conveyed and cost targets are being met.
- Using project insights gained during the contract review and bid phase, serve as the primary source for all internal stakeholders to ensure smooth handoff of information from estimating to production. This includes support for procurement, drafting, inventory allocation, and production control.
Engineering & Technical Support
- Interpret and understand governing specifications, contract plans, structural drawings and owner requirements.
- Communicate technical product requirements to other functional areas including engineering, sales, procurement and operations.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accountability for project outcomes and product-line profitability
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil strongly preferred) license not a requirement
- Experience in estimating, including performing take-offs and managing bids, within a steel fabrication or heavy construction related industry.
- Strong aptitude for technical drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Proficiency in MS Excel and general business computer usage is required
- Working knowledge of fabricated steel products and construction/manufacturing processes
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in highway, bridge, guardrail, or specialty fabricated steel products
- Familiarity with AISC, AWS, ASTM, DOT specifications and construction contract codes of standard practice
- ERP system experience related to estimating, costing, or project tracking
- Experience with AutoCad is preferred but not a requirement
